CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Our Teaching Philosophy

Our program develops self-confidence, grace under pressure, self-respect and respect for others.

  • Unlike team sports, each child sees the results of his or her effort, whether it’s a higher rank or other achievement awards.
  • Achievement is reached on an individual basis, and all children get a chance to participate.
  • Karate training can help bully-proof a child, but more so by short-circuiting the bully-baiting signals than by teaching a youngster how to fight.
  • The ultimate goal of Martial Arts does not lie in victory or defeat, but in the improvement of the participants’ character. This is what martial arts is all about.
  • We are very concerned with the well being and education of our children. We understand that younger students have a shorter attention span. Our unique children’s programs use interesting and enjoyable methods to hold attention and teach young students skills that they can use for life.

How do you Begin?

It all starts with an Orientation lesson; one-on-one with an instructor so we can address the areas that are most important to you. With both parents present (if possible), we’ll take your child through the basic movements and protocols they need to join a beginner class with other children of their own age. It is after this first group class that the first belt, a white belt, will be awarded as they begin their exciting journey to Black Belt and Beyond. Your child will be sized for a uniform that will be available in most cases at their next class. The Orientation lesson and first group class are by appointment only.

You’ll see that our schedule is very flexible, making it easy to schedule two classes per week. We ask that you set your schedule at the Orientation with the understanding that it can be changed, either permanently or for a day, with just a phone call to our office.

Classes at HMA are divided by age: Tiny Tigers for 3 year olds, Little Dragons for ages 4-5, Junior Dragons for 5-6, Junior Youth for 6-9 and Senior Youth for 10-12 year olds. Our age appropriate classes allow us to develop individual levels of learning, attention span and physical ability.

Please be aware that should you decide to enroll your child in our full program beyond the Free Trial period, that our tuition structure is different from other martial arts schools in that we don’t have extra fees for testing or promotion to the next belt, nor do we have a registration or membership fee. Our full program also includes private lessons as needed at no extra charge. We do have a minimum class requirement before allowing students to test for their next rank. This way we can be sure each child is working toward their personal best.
