Bully Solutions - A Free Workshop for Children & Parents Presented as a Community Service by Holden Martial Arts
Bullying. Bullies have been around since the beginning of time and it seems to be getting worse. Every child will be the target of bullying at some time in their lives - even bullies are victims; that's usually why they become abusive themselves. Bullying can cause the victims to miss school, be distracted during classes, turn to violence themselves as the Columbine killers did or even to harm themselves when they see no other way out. Our schools are doing the best they can, but time and financial resources are limited. The Zero Tolerance Policy is a great start, but can only address what happens after the fact. Our rule-abiding children are afraid to defend themselves because for fear they'll get in trouble too and the bully, who is usually a regular at the principal's office, knows and exploits this.
So what can we as parents do to keep our children emotionally and physically safe while staying within the policies of the school? We can take away the bully's target, not by removing them but by giving our children the tools and practice to stop bullies from seeing them as "easy pickings".
That's where Bully Solutions - a Workshop for Children and Parents comes in. In this one-hour session, we will discuss and play out
¨ The mindset of a bully
¨ Passive and Aggressive behavior and how it can get children (and adults) into trouble
¨ Assertive Communication and how it can keep children from being the target of verbal or physical assault, all while staying within the Zero Tolerance Policy of our schools.
Harry and Linda Grimm, owners of Holden Martial Arts, specialize in personal development through martial arts education for both children and adults. They are pleased to be able to offer Bully Solutions - a Workshop for Children and Parents free to the Wachusett Community. The information presented in this workshop has been previously taught only in karate classes at Holden Martial Arts but is now available in workshop form for the general public. Many HMA students have already used the Bully Solution Assertive Communication techniques effectively.
